Lulu said their family tea farmer doesn't normally ship products to America -- she had to find a company to help import the tea.

As I entered 2016 with my husband, Andy, and children by my side, I decided it was time to rekindle my long-held childhood dream. Andy and I attended a well-respected tea school in Taiwan, further advancing our knowledge and passion for Cha, and soon set our sights on the West. “Freshness is really important to us, so none of our tea batches sits for more than four hours before we pour it out,” said Adkisson, adding that the shop’s top ten drinks are listed on the menu board. Cha House uses only premium loose-leaf teas sourced from trusted farmers at plantations located in the high mountain ranges of Taiwan. "We are very proud to tell people why our tea is different," Lulu said. "It's sourced from a real tea farmer and we know where it's from. We visit our farmer and we know how they pick and bake our tea leaves." After searching several cities for a place to call home and share our Cha House vision, it was a serendipitous recommendation from Andy to visit Raleigh, NC that sealed the deal. It was the ideal community to both raise our family and introduce our love for the many unique presentations of tea.

When the doors opened in 2018, Julia and Lulu were proud to serve drinks made with tea straight from the farm their relatives own in Taiwan. "Long story short, we kind of fell in love with the area," said Andy. "We thought this could be good -- it's family friendly and there's potential for small businesses." Running the newest Cha House, slated to open in late September, is an exciting venture for Andy and Lulu, who live in Apex and have three young children. Julia will stay in Chapel Hill to run the Franklin Street location.
"Sometimes we get a little worried because we have these bulk items out on the ocean," Andy laughed. Lulu, Julia and Andy place a mass order for Cha House every three to six months. Tea leaves and other ingredients are shipped overseas to New York then delivered to North Carolina. Cha House co-owners Julia, Lulu and Lulu's husband, Andy, were living in Taiwan before they moved to the United States to open their first cafe on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. The Mandarin character for 'cha' comes together to form the shape of a home. In the same way, our core values, taken together, form the vision for our Cha House.
Their relatives' Taiwanese tea farm and their parents' Taipei noodle shop inspired them to open their own concept in the Triangle. After ordering up your eats you can grab a seat and make yourself comfortable. It usually takes 5 to 15 minutes to put your order together so it’s a good time to find your perch at Cha House. Communal high tops, window seating on the edges, and there’s even a funky little couch at the end of the space, set under white globe lighting.

Most importantly though, their familial embrace of every customer inspired me to one day open my own shop fueled by the same warm service and quality food. Although operating our restaurant undoubtedly kept the family busy, we still found time for frequent visits to my aunt and uncle’s tea fields in the mountainous Nantou region. Running through the seemingly endless rows of tea leaves, while simultaneously learning the many aspects of tea plant cultivation and selection, became a regular and cherished part of my childhood. These carefree, yet formative experiences would eventually help sow the seeds of my vision to open a tea house in America.
Cha House is an authentic Taiwanese boba/tea house, with stores located in the heart of Cary and Raleigh, North Carolina. It is right here that you’ll find many of the same drinks and foods you’d find on the streets of Taipei. But, we don’t stop there – we are constantly innovating and bringing new, exciting items to our menu. The bestseller, Lulu said, is the typical boba milk tea, which features a black tea base and brown sugar-soaked tapioca boba.
Selecting tea plantations from the high mountain ranges of Nantou and Ali Shan, our tea is exposed to much cooler temperatures and is shielded from the sun by perpetual mists. The result is a Cha House tea that’s much less bitter, and much more rich.
